What Contaminants Do UV Sterilizers Remove?
There are no micro-organisms known to be resistant to UV, unlike chlorination. UV is known to be highly effective against bacteria, viruses, algae, molds and yeasts, and disease causing oocysts like cryptosporidium and giardia. In practice, bacteria and viruses are the cause of most major waterborne pathogenic diseases. Of these enteric viruses, hepatitis virus and Legionella pneumophila have been shown to survive for considerable periods in the presence of chlorine, but are readily eliminated by UV treatment. For most microorganisms, the removal efficiency of UV for microbiological contaminants such as bacteria and virus generally exceeds 99.99%.
How is a UV sterilizer installed?
The UV sterilizer should be the last piece of equipment in the system before the water is returned to the aquarium. It should be preceded by the biological and mechanical filters, and any chemical filter or heat exchanger in the system. Follow the manufacturer's directions on installation. Most units use hose barb connectors to attach to the appropriate water pump or are designed to allow add-on connectors as a PVC slip fit or hose barb attachment.
What is the proper maintenance schedule for UV sterilizers?
The quartz sleeve will need to be checked monthly and removed and cleaned with rubbing alcohol. Some larger UV sterilizers have wiper mechanism units installed for easier maintenance.
For most units, the UV bulb will need to be replaced after 6 months of continuous use, however, this time may vary so be sure to follow the manufacturer's recommendations. When installing or changing a bulb, never look directly at the bulb when the unit is turned on. Doing so can result in permanent damage to your eyes. (The damage can occur without you feeling any discomfort.)
Always disconnect the unit from the electricity when performing maintenance to protect against possible shock. When turned on, the bulb becomes especially hot when in the air and submerging it in water may cause it to break.

A. NO. UV sterilizers are not a replacement for good biological and mechanical filtration, regular water changes, or proper control of the nitrogen cycle. A properly selected UV sterilizer can help clarify water, rid free-floating algae, and control outbreaks of harmful bacteria and certain parasites.
Q:Will A Time Clock On A Pool Shorten The Life Of The UV Lamp?
A:Some shortening of the lamp life can be expected when the Delta UV unit is turned off and back on frequently. However, a daily ON/OFF cycle will not create a major lamp life issue.
Q:Is There Any Residual Chemical Effect From UV?
A:No, UV light waves are used to kill bacteria and micro-organisms in the pool water and are applied only to the pool water that passes inside the Delta UV system's wet chamber in visual contact with the UV light wave transmission from the High Output UV lamp. No chemicals are added to the pool by the Delta UV system, and in fact, the pool will become as "chemical free" as possible when the Delta UV is installed.
