What is an Ultraviolet (UV) Pool Sanitizer?
Ultraviolet (UV) pool sanitizers utilize a cutting-edge, non-chemical process that uses germicidal UV light rays to sanitize water, air and surfaces that may be contaminated. Ultraviolet pool sanitizers emit a high intensity germicidal light ray that alters or disrupts the DNA or RNA of targeted organisms such as algae, bacteria, viruses, cysts and protozoa. The highly concentrated electromagnetic energy also destroys organic matter, eliminating the formation of dangerous chlorine by-products.
What does a UV sterilizer do?
A UV sterilizer is used to control infections by stopping the spread of microorganisms from one fish/coral/invertebrate to another through the water. It is also used in pond applications to control free-floating algae. When operated correctly, free-floating microorganisms will be killed by the UV light. Note that the organisms must be in the water that flows to the UV sterilizer. The UV light has no residual effect and will not kill organisms attached to fish (e.g., adult stage of ich) or rocks (e.g., algae).
How Ultraviolet Pool Sanitizers Work
SpectraLight is installed in-line just after your pools existing filtration system. SpectraLight bombards the passing water flow with a high intensity germicidal ultraviolet ray that destroys more than 60 waterborne pathogens, including algae, bacteria, cysts, and viruses. The UV sanitizing lamp is housed in an industrial graphite housing optimized for high flow rates. A highly specialized quartz glass sleeve protects the lamp from passing water while transmitting 99.9% of the UV light. The highly concentrated electromagnetic energy destroys organic matter and eliminates the formation of dangerous chlorine by-products called chloramines that commonly lead to red, stinging eyes, skin irritations, asthma and allergies. This energy penetrates the cell walls of bacteria, viruses, algae, cysts and all pathogens. That's right: no pathogen can escape a powerful dose of UV from a SpectraLight sterilizer.
How does it work?
UV sanitation systems eliminate chlorine-resistant microorganisms, which are common causes of pool closures. These systems reproduce UV radiation inside light chambers via powerful lamps, which emit germicidal UV-C light that is used to disinfect pool and spa water. Facilities equipped with these systems consume fewer chemicals and allow sanitizers to be more effective. How much more effective depends on the water's hardness, pH and other water chemistry factors. UV-C causes permanent damage to a number of microorganisms almost instantly as the water circulates through the light chamber. By disrupting the microorganism's DNA, protozoans, viruses and bacteria are unable to replicate and remain inert. This light, however, works only on water that flows through the chamber. Water in dead zones isn't treated by the light and the light does not act as a residual, thus the need for the presence of a halogen. The effects of UV-C are immediate and do not alter the water's composition.

Limitation of Use
The UV water disinfection system NOT intended for the treatment of water that has an obvious contamination or intentional source, such as raw sewage, nor is the unit intended to convert wastewater to microbiologically safe drinking water.
Water Quality (in)
Water quality plays a major role in the transmission of germicidal UV rays. It is recommended that the water does not exceed following maximum concentration levels
Effectively treating water with higher concentration levels than listed above can be accomplished, but may require added measures to improve water quality to treatable levels. If, for any reason, it is believed the UV transmission is not satisfactory, contact the factory.
UV wavelength (nm)
DOSAGE is the product of intensity & time
dosage=intensity*time=micro watt/cm2*time=microwatt-seconds per square centimeter
Chloramines (residual chlorine) is the smell you get from chlorine
Chloramines is the cause of eye and skin irritation
Chloramines is the cause of composite building structure corrosion.
No microbe can immunize it's self against UV rays even those pathogens that cannot be killed by chlorination.
The adverse impact of pool chemicals, especially to children, is 5 times greater than passive smoking Product and installation costs of Ultraviolet water sterilisation reactors will depending on pool size and site location.
Ultraviolet Sterilizers are designed for residential pool environments and will provide many years of reliable and problem-free service. Unlike other units, developed from industrial applications, the sterilization cell has been made smaller, to maximize the killing effects of the ultraviolet rays. The Ultraviolet system costs pennies a day, to operate and has no moving parts to break down. UV Sterilizers use high quality quartz UV irradiators, for quick action and extended life. The Sterilizer includes the necessary plumbing connectors and is designed and intended for residential pools only. Safe water and more peace of mind, are a close as adding the Ultraviolet Sterilizer to your pool.
