Automatic backflushing Activated Carbon Filter
The activated carbon filter is identical in its construction to the media filters.
This filter uses a double bottom chamber separated by a welded reinforced steel plate. The upper chamber contains the granular activated carbon and the lower chamber is empty and collects the filtered water. The plate is covered by "mushroom" diffusers, which are plastic made, slotted conical units. The uniform dispersion of water ensures an effective wash of the whole media volume, avoiding the phenomena of channeling (caking). The filters are particularly suitable for backflushing - a process involving reversal of the water flow and causing a turbulent expansion of the media like a fluidized bed.
After the backflushing is completed, the filter resumes its normal filtering mode as clean as a new filter.
Advantages
The active carbon filters of the unit removes the non-desired contaminations such as free active chlorine, odor and taste deteriorating materials and noxious haloform chemicals with adsorption from the untreated water. Beside of that the media filter decreases the organic content of the water and the possible fine contaminations. By periodical intense countercurrent flow, the deposited contaminations can be eliminated from the filter and the filter media will be loosened. If the adsorption ability runs out, the media needs to be changed.
Filters are controlled manually [with ball valves / shut-off valves] or automatically. In the case of an automatic filter control process, membrane or hydraulic or pneumatic valves are used.
The entire automatic process of filtration and back washing of filters is controlled by a central control unit. The control unit makes it possible to set filter washing on the basis of time, pressure difference or filtered water quantity.
Filters are washed, on a standard basis with raw water or with treated water from reservoirs.
Filters are fitted with a filtration inter-bottom with jets. The jets are made of the ABS material and make it possible to wash with water or both water and air. In the case of the filling height not exceeding 1500 mm, the water flushing process is fully sufficient.
Pressure filters are made of carbon steel with a protective anticorrosion coating with epoxy resin in the RAL 5010 [gentian blue] or 5012 [light blue] colour shade. The coating meets the conditions of hygienic harmlessness for contacts with drinking water.
