What is a Water Softener


water softener is a device about the size of a computer tower. It gets plumbed in to your house, usually underneath the kitchen sink, and it takes the water as it comes into the house and runs it through a pair of softening tanks, which remove the minerals from the water that cause limescale and soap scum.
Every so often, the machine flushes the minerals from the tanks by rinsing them through with salt water, which is why it needs to be kept topped up with blocks of salt. Aside from that, you don't need to do anything to keep it running. 
At the heart of a water softener is its ion-exchange resin. The resin consists of microscopic beads, and as the hard water passes through them, they trap the magnesium and calcium ions that are in it, so the water comes out totally soft. This is a fairly simple process that's been in use for over ninety years.
The complexity of modern softeners comes in when the resin needs regenerating. This happens when the resin has trapped all the hardness minerals it can, and needs to be flushed through with salt water. The timing of the regeneration is crucial: too soon, and you waste water and salt; too late, and you risk hard water getting into your system.
Our design uses a water meter to judge when to regenerate. We use a displacement meter - the most accurate meter there is, and the one used by water companies to calculate your water bill. It avoids a common problem: most types of meter can't measure the flow of water if it's very slow, which happens whenever a loft tank or toilet cistern is filling up.

What does a Water Softener do?

Water softeners use a process called ion exchange. The softener unit contains a column filled with beads of a resin which remove the dissolved calcium and magnesium ions from the hard water flowing through it, replacing them with sodium. Periodically, (typically once a day) the softener regenerates the resin by washing with brine (sodium chloride solution), carrying the calcium and magnesium to drain, and leaving fresh sodium ions on the resin ready for the next treatment cycle. Regeneration is usually triggered automatically by either an electronic timer or mechanical water flow meter. The unit has to be refilled with salt (in the form of granules, small tablets or blocks) typically once a month. 
Water suppliers define the level of water hardness (total hardness) in mg/l (milligrams per litre) of calcium carbonate. The water supply is considered to be hard if it is above 200 mg/l. 60% of water supplies in the US are hard and are typically 300 to 350 mg/l total hardness. Softening generally reduces the hardness to less than 10 mg/l.

Working principle
01. By means of Absorbing the calcium and magnesium ions in water with resin, since the hardness of water is mainly composed of calcium and magnesium, in general, we adopt cation exchange resin (softener), replace Ca2+, Mg2+ (main ingredients for scale) in water, as the increase of Ca2+ and Mg2+ in resin, removing performance on Ca2+, Mg2+ of resin will gradually reduce.
02. When the resin has absorbed a certain amount of calcium and magnesium ions, it must be regenerated, the regeneration process is that flush resin layer with the salt water in salt box, replace hardness ion out of the resin again, and discharged from the tank with waste liquid of regeneration, then resin resumed the function of softening and exchanging.
03. The principle of sodium ion exchange and softening treatment is to exchange cation in the raw water with resin, hardness constituents Ca2+and Mg2+ in water exchange Na+ in resin, thus absorb the Ca2+and Mg2+ to make the water to be softened.

After the water treated by sodium ion exchanger, the Ca+ and Mg+ were superseded by Na +.

To clean the beads the water softener uses a process often called regeneration which consists of three cycles: BackwashRecharge and Rinse.

Backwash:
Regeneration starts with a backwash cycle where the valve reverses water flow in the tank and flushes the tank of debris. The debris is then eliminated out the drain.

Recharge or Regeneration:
In the Recharge cycle the salty brine solution is pumped into the mineral tank. The highly concentrated salt solution with its positive electrical charge is attracted to the negatively charged plastic beads and forces the magnesium and calcium off the beads.

The salt or potassium by itself is not positively charged enough to displace the magnesium or calcium in normal concentrations, but in the highly concentrated solution of brine, it is strong enough to force the calcium and magnesium off.
The excess magnesium and calcium rich salty water is then flushed out of the tank and down the drain.
Rinse:
The tank is then filled and rinsed with water and the process repeats itself. The beads are now coated with salt. As the calcium and magnesium from the hard water are attracted to the plastic beads, the salt, now in much diluted quantities and smaller electrical charge, is forced off the beads and is suspended in the softened water.

When the beads become nearly all coated with minerals, the control valve starts a new regeneration cycle and cleans them again, flushing the hard water minerals down the drain.

Control mode of fully automatic water softener
(1) Single tank time type: It adopts microcomputer to control the time, when operation of the equipment reaches setting time, it will automatically enter the regeneration condition, which can be regenerated for once a day or once for some day.
(2) Single tank flow type: It adopts control of turbine flow or electronic flow sensor, when the yield of softener reaches preset flow it will automatically enter the regeneration condition, which can be recycled many times every day.
(3) Double tanks flow type: Which could be divided into one running-one alternating, and simultaneous running and separately regeneration.
(4) One running and the other alternation type: One tank is running while the other is alternating, when water yield of operating tank reaches the preset flow rate, it will enter the regeneration stage, meanwhile, the other tank will enter the working state, these two tanks work and regenerate alternatively to realize continuous water supplying of 24 hours.
(5) Simultaneous running and separately regeneration type: Two cans running simultaneously, when the flow rate reaches the setting rate, one tank (can) will regenerate and the other tank will output water continuously, when the first regeneration tank finish the regeneration it will enter the working stage, the other one will enter regeneration stage, these two cans finish regeneration and enter working state simultaneously.
